Pres. Buhari assures Nigerians "We will give you positive change as we promised"

President Buhari today assured Nigerians of giving the positive and progressive change he promised durig the 2015 election campaigns. Buhari gave the assurance when he spoke in Osun state today
"We promised Nigerian people positive and progressive change during our campaign. We are not and shall not be deterred from that noble undertaking. But as we have learnt from history, change has never been attained by any nation on a bed of roses, but rather, through patience, perseverance and steadfastness.
We are quite aware of the pains and inconveniences that have been the lot of the citizenry in the past one year as we strive to faithfully implement our programmes in fulfilment of our change agenda. We are however comforted by the real change and progress we have made in fighting corruption and restoring integrity to government; providing security for lives and property; and positioning the government for effectiveness and especially deregulating the oil sector"he said

Three hospitals were shut in Ogun "over deaths of pregnant women"

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun

The Ogun State Government says it has ordered the immediate closure of three hospitals for alleged quackery that led to the deaths of two pregnant women during delivery.
In a statement from the Ministry of Health made available to our correspondent on Thursday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, ordered the closure of Shepherd Clinic and Maternity, Ayo Ni Medical Centre and Dayo Maternity Home, all in Ifo Local Government Area of the state.
Ipaye, who was represented by the Deputy Director Hospital Services, Dr. Solomon Shokunbi during a monitoring exercise, said the two pregnant women (names withheld) bled to death because they were attended to by quack doctors.
Ipaye explained that one of the deceased women had initially been on admission at Dayo Maternity Home, before she was referred to Ayo Ni Medical Centre, where she later died after efforts by the former to take the delivery of the baby proved abortive.
The commissioner decried what he called the criminal and inhuman activities of quack doctors, adding that government had since commenced the registration and revalidation exercise for all private hospitals in the state.
Ipaye said no fewer than 43 private health facilities have been shut for non-compliance with the exercise in recent times.
He urged the people of the state to heed government’s warning by desisting from patronising quacks and unlicensed health facilities.
He also called on members of the public to report any activity of quack doctors in their communities or call the hotline of the Department of Hospital.

Jobless man gets N200, 000 bail over lotto machine damage

An unemployed man, Falolade Ayinla, who allegedly damaged a lottery machine and stole N169,000, was on Thursday charged before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.
The accused was, however, granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.
The accused, whose address is unknown, is being tried for malicious damage, causing bodily harm and theft.
Ayinla, however, pleaded not guilty to the three-counts preferred against him before Magistrate Bola Olagbegi-Adelabu.
Prosecutor Mary Ajiteru said the accused committed the offences with others still at large on June 5 at noon in Ikorodu, recounting that the accused and others beat up the complainant, Kamiyo Adeshola, damaged his lottery machine and robbed him of N169,000, she told the court.
“They used an iron stand to cut the complainant’s fingers and toes thereby causing him grievous bodily harm.
“This accused and others at large went on to damage the Lotto machine of the complainant and stole his money forcefully,’’ Cpl Ajiteru said.
The offences contravened Sections 285, 243 and 338 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The magistrate has adjourned the case to Sepember 16 for mention.

Refugee influx leaves Merkel isolated in EU

German Chancellor Angela Merkel

One year after opening Germany’s doors to a mass influx of refugees, Chancellor Angela Merkel insists she was right and has stuck to her message that “we can do it”.
But while the bold move won her the gratitude of those fleeing war and misery, and broad praise for her principled humanitarian stance, she has also been accused of sowing discord in Europe and exacerbating the migrant crisis.
Here are three questions on the momentous events since Merkel decided, on September 4, 2015, to keep open the national borders in the face of the growing influx that would swell arrivals in Germany to over one million asylum seekers in a year.

– What motivated Merkel? –
Merkel, usually described as cool-headed and rational, apparently took a decision strongly guided by emotion when she decided to allow into Germany tens of thousands of refugees who were stranded in Hungary.
The move surprised the world and saw the German leader hailed as ‘Mama Merkel’ by grateful migrants.
When refugees from the overcrowded Budapest railway station headed on foot through Austria towards Germany on September 4, Vienna and Berlin agreed to let them through, rather than to shutter the borders.
At the time, the public was reeling from the jarring photo of three-year-old Syrian refugee boy Aylan lying dead on a Turkish beach, and the discovery in Austria of 71 dead migrants in a truck.
A German minister, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that “Merkel was right to open the borders because otherwise there would have been deaths, and the German population would have forced us to open the borders anyway.”
Merkel had also been infuriated by vulgar insults from xenophobic protesters during a visit to a refugee shelter in Heidenau in the former communist east.
It was a “traumatic experience” for her, said Hajo Funke of Berlin’s Free University.
Speaking after over 20,000 migrants crossed German borders during a single weekend, the pastor’s daughter said that if Germany couldn’t help those in desperate need, it would “not be my country anymore”.
– How has it changed Europe? –
Supporters compared Merkel to Mother Teresa, for standing up for Europe’s humanist values and the core principle of the free movement of people in the Schengen area.
This week, she told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily: “Do we stand by what our constitution says about human dignity? … That’s what this is about.”
But critics charged that Merkel’s actions, including appearing in a ‘selfie’ picture with a migrant, created a pull factor that, in the smartphone age, encouraged tens of thousands more to make the dangerous trek.
Merkel, who usually seeks European consensus, had decided to “go it alone” — according to the front cover of this week’s Stern news magazine — by suspending the Dublin rules that say refugees must seek asylum in the first EU country they enter.
French Prime Minister Manuel Valls later declared that Merkel’s policy was “untenable in the long term”.
Countries that had looked to German leadership during the eurozone debt crisis would largely ignore Berlin’s demands for them to share the refugee burden under a binding quota system.
Eastern European countries closed their borders and refused to take in mostly Muslim migrants, with hardliners painting them as potential jihadists.
Merkel’s migration policy “revealed a lack of solidarity in Europe,” said Andreas Roedder of Mainz University. “Whichever way you look at it, the consequences are dramatic for Europe.”
As a result, Merkel is now more “isolated in Europe”, he said, adding that the crisis was “not without effect” on the Brexit campaign.
– What happens next? –
Germany faces the challenge of caring for the asylum seekers living in shelters across the country, including providing housing and language training and finding jobs for them.
The influx has sharply slowed, thanks to the closure of the Balkans route and a controversial deal with Turkey to halt the inflow which was signed in March.
Nonetheless, tens of thousands more have arrived this year, and Germany has witnessed a sharp rise in racist hate crimes and xenophobic sentiment, heightened by several bloody jihadist attacks this summer.
The rightwing populist AfD party is represented in half of Germany’s 16 state assemblies and looks like to enter two more through elections this month, while Merkel has also faced open rebellion from her conservative Bavarian allies.
Next year Merkel, who has been in power for 11 years, faces federal elections. She is yet to declare whether she will run for a fourth term as head of EU’s biggest economy.

I will Make NIMASA World-Class Organisation "Peterside assured"

Dr. Dakuku Peterside, Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), has said that he and his management team were determined to make the agency a world class and high performance organisation.
The DG gave the assurance during the Management Performance Review (MPR) of the agency held in Lagos.
He said that the agency’s repositioning initiative was all-encompassing and when concluded would be beneficial to the entire maritime sector.
Peterside also said that the MPR was an avenue to assess the progress being made by the agency viz-a-viz its reform, restructuring and repositioning drive to ensure that its mandate is achieved.
The DG said, “There is no organisation that can grow without innovation and the MPR affords us a rare opportunity to assess our journey thus far. It is a rare privilege to match set goals with results…to assess ourselves on how far we have gone in this journey.”
The DG said, “When I joined you in NIMASA we sat down and agreed to build a world class high performance organisation. In subscribing to that, we set out to craft a Medium Term Strategic plan which would be our roadmap. “We have already started the critical elements of the things we agreed that are necessary to build a world class maritime organisation. One is the automation of our processes and to fast track this, we set up a special taskforce. It is our vision that by October, NIMASA would be fully automated.”
The NIMASA boss noted that the dream of the agency was to be recognised as the foremost maritime regulatory agency in Africa that would be  the pride of the continent.
Peterside who said that the agency has the duty to facilitate maritime business not to stifle it also assured stakeholders that NIMASA would create an enabling environment that would satisfy the yearnings of all.
“The bigger picture is to build a world class, high performance organisation that would satisfy the interest and yearnings of our clients as well as serve the interest of the country that set us up. We are indeed facilitators of maritime business, therefore we will not stifle it,” he stated.
The MPR session which was still going on is expected to review the achievements of the agency’s targets for the half-year ended June 30, 2016 and map out strategies for meeting the set targets as outlined in its work plan for the period in review.

Dollar edges down against yen ahead of US jobs report

The dollar edged down against the yen Thursday, snapping a week-long winning streak as traders await jobs data that could seal the case for a September US interest rate hike.
Friday’s non-farm payrolls report will offer the latest clues about the state of the world’s top economy and whether it is strong enough to withstand higher borrowing costs.
The US Federal Reserve has signalled it is likely to raise US interest rates this year, citing steady job creation as a sign of a healthier domestic economy, but the timeline for a move remains hazy.
“FX markets are waiting for Friday’s US August employment report for dollar direction,” Elias Haddad, a senior foreign-exchange strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia in Sydney, told Bloomberg News.
Some analysts are doubtful about a rate hike as early as this month, despite hawkish remarks last week from Fed boss Janet Yellen and her vice chair Stanley Fischer.
“While a September hike is not impossible, forward guidance will remain cautious and a range break for the dollar is highly unlikely,” Australia and New Zealand Banking Group wrote in a commentary.
On Thursday in Tokyo, the dollar weakened to 103.29 yen from 103.43 yen in New York, although it was still around its highest level in a month against the yen.
The euro was slightly weaker at $1.1152 and 115.19 yen against $1.1156 and 115.38 yen in US trade.
The greenback booked gains against most Asian emerging currencies, edging up against the Singapore dollar, the South Korean won, Philippine peso, and Malaysian ringgit.

Dalung Proposes New Road Map for Nigeria Sport

Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung, is craving the return of the National Sports Commission (NSC) to play a pivotal role in the new sports architecture being proposed to move the sector forward.

Speaking on an NTA Network Programme, Tuesday Live, Dalung said for the ministry to get it right in sports development, it must go back to the foundation of sports which is the grassroots.
“We have to restructure our sports architecture where government will concentrate on investing grants on talents or grassroots sports development while the elite sports will be left for the federations and professionalism,” stressed the minister who claimed not to be part of the move that scrapped the NSC.
Dalung explained that a technical committee was set up to streamline the merging of the Youth and Sports ministries of which he was not part of.
“The NSC was scrapped when I was appointed minister of Youth and Sports. The merging of two ministries to become one led to the establishment of a technical committee to merge the ministries. What came out of the report of the committee was just a briefing for me. The committee had already decided to merge the ministry independent of the minister (Dalung) but the popular opinion was that I scrapped NSC,” stressed the minister while fielding a question during the programme late Tuesday night.
He admitted that one of the major predicaments of sports administration in Nigeria was the election of people into offices of the federations.
“There, you have the immigration of people from their traditional sports to other federations to assume leadership.
“In the next elections, we will ensure that elections are conducted based on the rules and regulations of the federations.
“Federations will not be created for the purpose of accommodating political interests. They must be viable and functional and will be charged with the responsibility of identification of talents,” the minister further observed.
He pledged to have men and women of proven integrity on the boards of the federations at the next elections.
The minister continued: “The management of the resources is also important because when you talk about Corporate Nigeria, nobody will invest in a place where he’s not sure of transparent management of the resources. So the federations have to manage their affairs very transparently.”
Dalung however promised that shortly, the ministry will revisit the architecture of sports in Nigeria to ensure that it serves the passion of Nigerians against all these issues.
“We will soon put up a council memo that will get the backing of the Ministry of Education to restore school sports as part of the compulsory component of the school curriculum in Nigeria because sports development cannot be isolated from educational development. This has to be restored back to our school system,” he said.
On talents development, the minister noted that some of the athletes who took part in the Rio Games have been recycled over the years.
“Some of the athletes have been to the Olympics five to six times without replacements. How can we make progress without setting the pace for new talent development? So for me, the job for 2020 Olympic has started and by this week, we will begin to unfold some of the things we have for restructuring the sports architecture of the country and ensure that it is compatible with passion of Nigerians,” concludes the minister.
NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, Dream Team VI coach, Samson Siasia and two others who were part of Team Nigeria to the Rio2016 Games spoke on various ways to avoid a repeat of the country’s poor outing at the next Olympiad in Tokyo, Japan.
Nigeria finished in the 78th place on the final medals table with only a bronze medal won in the men’s football event.
